CURRICULUM AND SESSION SAMPLES

An explanation of “relationship with the race.”

Session One: Relationship with the Race

In Session One, attendees will be introduced to my new mental training framework which prioritizes the relationship with the race. We will discuss both the coach and athlete relationship with the race, and why relationship with the race matters to athlete performance. I will provide guidance as to how coaches can clarify their own preferred relationship with the race and help their athletes to do the same.

Session Two: Forms and Origins of Weather

In Session Two, attendees will explore the subject of mental and emotional
“weather” – my term for psychological factors that get in the way of a person’s ideal relationship with the race. We will highlight most common forms of weather that affect coaches and athletes (such as perceived expectations, pressure and comparison), and develop greater understanding of ourselves.

Session Three: Working with Weather, Drills and Activation

In Session Three, attendees will learn simple methods to work with their own and their athletes’ weather, as well as ways to strengthen their preferred relationship with the race.

Session Four: The Loose Plan

The loose plan is a simple mental performance tool that helps athletes focus and act the way that they want to within workouts and races. In Session Three, the loose plan will be thoroughly explained.

Session Five: Weather Inside the Race

Session Five will cover mental and emotional weather that arises for both coaches and athletes inside a race. For athletes this includes, panic/ anxiety, negative self-talk, giving up, mysterious fatigue, disassociating, and more. We will have a discussion about how weather inside the race looks for coaches (and other supporters like mental performance consultants!).

Session Six: Post-Race Conversations and Feedback

In Session Six, we will discuss conversations and interactions with athletes post-race. We will cover best practices for protecting and growing an athlete’s ideal relationship with the race as well as their relationship with themselves and their coach.

Session Seven: Mental Performance Tools

Session Seven will focus on foundational sport psychology topics such as helping athletes to manage nerves, use visualization and better understand confidence.

NAU Coach Jarred Cornfield on a coach’s calmness, care, valuing what we can control and the Titanic.

Session Eight: Mental Performance Tools

Session Eight will focus on the perspectives that we normally encourage toward racing in general, but especially championship season such, as a sense of belonging, irreplaceability, curiosity, playing the game of running, and racing with nothing to lose. Exercises to help both athletes and coaches embody these
approaches will be discussed.
